A RECENT WEXNER CENTER FOR ARTS RESIDENCY CONCLUDED WITH A SOUND INSTALLATION BY CARL LOSS MATTA.
IN HIS EXHIBIT THIS SPANS MORE THAN TWO DECADES IS BEGAN WITH CONVERSATION AS MONG SCHOLARS ANT ARTISTS AND WRITERS AND ACTIVISTS.
WE TALKED WITH THE ARTIST AND ONE OF THE LOCAL PARTICIPANTS ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND THE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS THAT THE PROJECT CREATES.
>> WE HAVE REPRESENTED AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO A WORK THAT WAS NOT ON THE COMMISSION BUT LOCAL TO COLUMBUS.
AND IN THINKING OF WORKING ON A PROJECT LIKE THAT, IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO ME TO COME TO THE PLACE WHERE I'M WORKING AND IN THIS CASE COLUMBUS AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT TOPICS ARE IMPORTANT AND RELEVANT, WHAT ARE PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT AND HOW THOSE IDEAS CORRESPOND WITH THE IDEAS IN MIND TO DEVELOP A PROJECT.
SO IN THE CASE OF THE ASSEMBLY, I CAME A COUPLE OF TIMES TO COLUMBUS.
AND THIS WAS IN THE MIDST OF THE KIND OF MOVEMENT AROUND THINKING ABOUT COMMEMORATION AND MONUMENTS AND MONUMENTALITY AND THE POTENTIAL ERASURE OF SOME OF THOSE FIGURES THAT REPRESENT FORMS OF COLONIALISM OR PATRIARCHY AND IT BEARS THE NAME OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND IT IS PERHAPS THE LARGEST CITY IN THE WORLD THAT DOES THAT.
SO THE COLLABORATE DEPARTED FROM WANTING TO TALK TO PEOPLE BOTH IN COLUMBUS AND AROUND THE COUNTRY AROUND WHAT WOULD BE AT STAKE AND WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE WERE TO CONSIDER CHANGING THE NAME OF A CITY.
AND NOT ONLY IN KIND OF A ADMINISTRATIVE TERMS BUT ALSO IN TERMS OF PROCESS.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS FEATURED IN THE WORK WHICH IS ALSO THE CENTERPIECE FOR THIS BOOKLET IS A CONTRIBUTION BY SAAD JONES WHO IS BASED IN COLUMBUS WHERE HE'S TALKING ABOUT NAMES.
WHAT DO THEY MEAN.
HOW COULD WE THINK ABOUT ANOTHER NAME FOR THE CITY AND HE PROPOSED IF HIS SPEECH THE IDEA OF TONY MORRIS AS A PROUD DAUGHTER OF THE STATE AND AS SOMEONE WHO WROTE SO MUCH ABOUT THE CONDITIONS OF RACE AND SEGREGATION IN THE STATE.
SO HE GOES ON TO SAY THAT HE WOULD THINK FOR EXAMPLE BELOVED WOULD BE AN INTERESTING NAME FOR THE CITY.
BELOVED, OHIO.
>> WHAT REALLY STUCK OUT TO ME WAS THE IDEA OF POWERING OF LISTENING.
THE POWER OF CONVERSATION AND SORT OF THE IDEA THAT STEPS TO RECKON WITH THE PAST AND SORT OF BUILD FUTURE SOLUTIONS STARTS WITH LISTENING.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT THE PIECE IS THAT YOU HAVE TO LISTEN.
SO, WHICH IS WHAT WE ASK OF ANYONE WHEN WE'RE TRYING TO FIND SOLUTIONS.
>> IT IS A STAGED CONVERSATION BETWEEN A CHARACTERS OR ACTORS THAT ARE PERFORMED BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY IN COLUMBUS.
AND WHAT THEY'RE DOING IS THEY ARE PERFORMING ROLES THAT WERE INITIALLY SPOKEN BY DIFFERENT COMMUNITY ACTIVIST AND PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY THAT WE INVITED TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH OVER THREE DIFFERENT SESSIONS.
>> OHIO IS A STATE THAT HAS -- THERE ARE NO FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBES HERE.
SOME ARE IN OKLAHOMA.
I DON'T IMAGINE THAT TRIBES DON'T WANT TO COME BACK TO COLUMBUS AND THEY DON'T WANT TO ASSOCIATE WITH OHIO BECAUSE OF THE TRAUMA THEY ARE ANCESTORS ENDURED.
>> EARLY ON IN THE CONVERSATION WITH PEOPLE BOTH IN COLUMBUS AND ELSEWHERE, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE CHANGING OF THE NAPE ITSELF WAS NOT THE PROJECT.
OR IT COULD BE A PROJECT MAYBE FOR SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T EXIST NECESSARILY IN THE SPACE OF A MUSEUM OR AN ART PROJECT THAT DOESN'T REALLY HAVE THE POSSIBILITY TO INITIATE SUCH AN ENDEAVOR.
I THINK THE PROJECT BECAME MUCH MORE ABOUT THINKING WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS OF OPPRESSION THAT PRODUCE FORMS OF COLONIALISM IN A CITY OR A COUNTRY OR A TOWN OR A NEW SITUATION AND HAVE THE CONVERSATIONS REALLY REVOLVE AROUND PROCESS, AND HOW CHANGE COULD BE POSSIBLE.
NOT THROUGHOUT DURING A SYMBOL, BUT IN CREATING CONDITIONS FOR CHANGE.
AND I THINK A LOT OF THAT HAS TO DO WITH UNDERSTANDING WHAT ARE THE MOVEMENTS AND SITUATIONS THAT HAPPEN ON THE GROUND, WHETHER PEOPLE ALREADY ARE DOING AND THINKING ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE IDEA OF CHANGING THOSE CONDITIONS OF OPPRESSION.
WHO REMAINS AT THE TOP AND WHO REMAINS AT THE BOTTOM AND HOW THE IDEA OF COMMEMORATION AND SYMBOLIC COMMEMORATION COULD BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO THINK ABOUT CHANGING SOME OF THOSE PROCESSES ON THE GROUND.
SO THAT QUESTION OF THE ERASURE OF THE NAME IS A BIT OF A PROVOCATION BUT IT IS ALSO AN INVITATION TO THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT I JUST MENTIONED.
HOW WOULD THAT HELP THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ARE HIDING AND LYING UNDERNEATH A NAME.
AND WHAT IT WOULD MEAN TO THINK ABOUT CHANGING SYMBOLS, LIKE WHAT ARE THE SYMBOLS WE REVERE IN OUR CULTURE AND ALSO RETHINKING TRADITION, YOU KNOW.
SOME PEOPLE MIGHT BE ATTACHED TO SOMETHING BECAUSE IT IS TRADITIONAL OR THE WAY THAT WE THINK IT SHOULD BE.
>> ONE MOST UNEXPECTED OUTCOMES WAS REALLY REALLY THINKING ABOUT OW MARGINALIZED PEOPLE, COLONIZED PEOPLE ARE THE ONES THINKING ABOUT SOLUTIONS.
I THINK, YOU KNOW, CARLOS IS REALLY MAKING THE PROJECT IN AN EFFORT TO REALLY UNDO AND, YOU KNOW, RETHINK, YOU KNOW, THE POSITION OF COLONIZED PEOPLE AND THE SOLUTION.
>> IN MY WORK I HAVE DEALT PRIMARILY WITH TWO MAIN INTERESTS.
ONE HAS TO DO WITH THE POLITICS OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY BUT THE OTHER HAS TO DO WITH THE DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATION AND THE IDEA OF DEMOCRACY IN OUR SOCIETY.
SO I FEEL THE ASSEMBLY OF THE BODY WORK THAT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING SINCE 2012 CALLED DEMOCRACY CYCLE, WHERE A DOCUMENTARY BASED STRATEGIES, LIKE WHAT WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW, EYE TREE TRIED TO CREATE A SET AND STRUCTURED ASPECTS OF A SOCIETY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF DIFFERENT MINORITY GROUPS.
>> WHEN YOU TRAVEL THE EXHIBITION, YOU START TO SEE HOW EVERYTHING SORT OF IS THREADED AND HOW WE ALL ARE PARTICIPATING IN THIS BIG CONVERSATION AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO SHIFT THINGS INTO A -- A MORE CAREFUL AND HOPEFUL FUTURE.
I THINK THAT IS WHAT I GET WHEN I'M IN THIS SPACE.
>> I HOPE THAT PROJECT WILL RESONATE AS AN INVITATION TO THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE -- THE UNDERLYING QUESTIONS THAT ARE PRESENT IN THE WORK AND MAYBE WE'LL SERVE AS A KIND OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT STARTED TO THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS, TO THINK ABOUT THEM.
AND MAYBE SOMEBODY WILL TAKE ON THE MONUMENTAL TASK OF ACTUALLY CHANGING THE NAME OF THE CITY OR STARTING A MOVEMENT OR CHANGING THE NAME OF THE CITY.
AND THIS WOULD REPRESENT AN INTERESTING CONCEPT YOU'LL BACKGROUND IN THE SENSE THAT SO MANY DIFFERENT TOPICS ARE COVERED.
SO IT IS RANGED FROM THINKING ABOUT THE LEGAL STRUCTURES THAT WOULD NEED TO BE ENACTED IN ORDER TO DO THAT, TO THE KIND OF COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS THAT YOU WOULD NEED TO HAVE IN ORDER TO DO THAT, TO REALLY JUST ALSO STIPULATING AROUND WHAT A NAME IS AND WHAT AN INTERESTING AND INCLUSIVE NAME COULD BE.

SO THOSE WOULD KNOW ME, KNOW THAT I COULD BE VERY ENERGETIC AND THAT COMES OUT IN SOME OF THE COLORS THAT I USE.

THERE IS NEVER GOING TO BE ANYTHING OVERLY DULL OR DRAMATIC.

SO I'M A BIG FAN OF ABSTRACT WHICH IS KIND OF IRONIC BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I DO.
IT WAS MORE ABOUT THE -- I DIDN'T LIKE THE LITERAL INTERPRETATION OF SKYLINES OR BARNS AND TREES.
I LIKED BEING ABLE TO HAVE MY OWN VISION OF WHAT THE ART PIECE MEANT.
BECAUSE I THINK ABSTRACT PAINTERS PAINT WITH INTENTION BUT WE ALSO PAINT WITH INTUITION.
SO I FIND IT FASCINATING TO SEE WHAT DO I SEE GOING INTO THE PIECE VERSUS LIKE WHAT THEY SET.
2017 I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE PRODUCTIVE TO DO AS FAR AS STRESS RELIEF.
I USED TO RUN AND LIFT AND NOT THAT THAT IS NOT PRODUCTIVE, BUT IT TAKES TIME AND DEADATION BUT I WANTED TO MAKE A LITTLE MORE SO FOR ME LOOKING AT ART WORK WAS THERAPEUTIC.
SO I WANTED TO GIVE THAT A SHOT AND NOT BEING TRAINED TO DO THIS WAS KIND OF, IT WAS DIFFERENT.
THIS IS THE HILLY GALLERY.
FOR ME, THIS PLACE IS VERY HOMEY AND WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT IS I COULD FIND EVERYTHING THAT I WANT.
SO IF I'M LOOKING FOR ABSTRACT ART, IF I'M LOOKING FOR GLASS, I COULD FIND THAT HERE.
SO, IT IS NOT JUST A GALLERY TO ME.
IT IS LIKE A HOME.
SO I WILL HAVE ROTATIONS OF ART WORK AND HAVE BETWEEN THREE TO FIVE PIECES.
THIS IS CALLED RISE UP.
THIS GOES BACK TO SOME OF THE MOVEMENT THAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH, SOCIAL UNREST AND ALL OF THAT.
SO I WANTED TO GIVE SOMETHING AND YOU LOOK AT TONES OF BROWNS AND EARTH TONES, SO IT'S KIND OF PUSHING YOU A CERTAIN DIRECTION WITHOUT NECESSARILY TAKING YOU ALL THE WAY THERE.
WE WANTED TO KIND OF GET INVOLVED IN THE WHOLE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT.
NOT JUST THROUGH PROTEST AND THOSE MEANS BUT HOW COULD WE USE OUR ARTISTIC VOICES TO MAKE A VERY STRONGLY STATED MESSAGE WITHOUT SAYING WORDS.
AND WHAT WE DID, THE FIRST ONE WAS AT OHIO THEATER AND IT WAS A COMPILATION OF FLOWERS AND YOUNG CHILDREN THAT WERE BLACK AND SHE WAS PICKING FLOWERS AND THE YOUNG BOY HAD A PAINT BRUSH AND THEN I CAME IN AS THE ARTISTIC ABSTRACT SKY OF SHAPES AND COLOR AND WILL CAME IN WITH THE CITY SCAPE AND IT JUST -- I THINK IT WAS A REALLY GREAT FUSION OF ALL OF OUR TALENTS TOGETHER BECAUSE NORMALLY YOU WOULD NOT HAVE AN ABSTRACT PAINTER MIXED WITH TWO ARTISTS BUT I THINK THAT TO ME WAS -- THAT IS WHAT MADE THE WORK SO POWERFUL.

HE'S ANOTHER REASON THAT I DO A LOT OF THINGS THAT I DO.

AND JUST OVERALL JUST EVERY DAY THINGS FOR HIM.
LIKE, THAT IS MY BUDDY.
HE JUST BRINGS ME JOY AND I THINK HAVING MORE JOY IN ANY LIFE HAS ALSO PROBABLY HELPED MY ART WORK TRANSCEND.
I THINK ANOTHER THING THAT KIND OF DROVE ME TO WANT TO BECOME A PAINTER WAS BEING TOLD THAT PAINTERS WITH BORN THIS WAY.
ARTISTS ARE BORN ARTISTS AND THEY'RE ARTIST THEIR ENTIRE LIFE.
THAT FOR ME WAS A PERSONAL CHALLENGE.
SO NOT ONLY WAS I WANTED TO GET OUT THERE AND PAINT AND FIND A WAY TO RELAX, I WANTED TO PROVE SOMEBODY WRONG.
AND IT'S BEEN A HIT SO FAR SO I WAS RIGHT.
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF UNTIL YOU DO IT.
AND I LIVE MY LIFE TO GET OUT THERE AND JUST TRY IT.

AND I WAS -- AND IT WAS WHAT MADE THE MOST SENSE FOR ME WHEN IT CAME TO FIGURING OUT SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE A CAREER BUT ALSO STILL FUN.
I GET COMMISSION TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
BUT ALSO I TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR MYSELF AS WELL.
AND GETTING HIRED AS A FREELANCER FOR PLACES LIKE "THE NEW YORK TIMES," "THE WASHINGTON POST," FOX MEDIA AND I ENJOY THAT BECAUSE EVERY ASSIGNMENT IS NEAT BECAUSE I GET TO GO NEW PLACES.
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WE'RE GOING TO WALK INTO.
I NEVER WHAT THE SUBJECT LOOKS LIKE A LOST TIMES.
SOMETIMES I'LL LOOK THEM UP AND I COULD FIND THEM ON LINKED-IN TO GET AN IDEA BUT A LOT OF TIMES I'M WALKING IN, JUST LIKE, HEY.
LET'S DO THE THING.
>> ALSO I'VE BEEN ABLE THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS TO WORK WITH SOME OF THE LARGER ORGANIZATIONS IN CLEVELAND.
INSTITUTIONS.
I JUST NEVER IMAGINED AS A STUDENT THAT NOW SIX YEARS AFTER UNDERGRAD THAT I WOULD BE WORKING WITH SOME OF THE PEOPLE AND THE INSTITUTIONS THAT I'M WORKED WITH NOW AND WHICH IS REALLY EXCITED AND REALLY INTERESTING.
I'M INTERESTED AS A CONTINUE TO DEVELOP WITH MY ARTISTIC PRACTICE TO BE MORE CONSIDERED AS A CONTEMPORARY ARTIST OR CONCEPT YOU'LL ARTIST THAN JUST A PHOTOGRAPHER BECAUSE I WANT TO CHOOSE WHATEVER MEDIA MAKES THE MOST SENSE FOR THE CONCEPT AND IDEA THAT I HAVE.
VERSUS TRYING TO MAKE PHOTOGRAPHY ALWAYS FIT.
YES, I COULD DO PHOTOGRAPHY, BUT SOMETIMES OTHER MEDIA DO MAKE MORE SENSE AND I WANT TO GIVE BY MYSELF THE TIME AND SPACE FOR THAT EXPERIMENTATION TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKS BEST.
RIGHT NOW FOR MY RESIDENCY AT MOCHA CLEVELAND, MY END GOAL IS TO HAVE INSULATION THAT HAS BOTH OBJECTS AND AUDIO VERSUS HAVING A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION.
MOCHA HAS PROVIDED FOR ME TO CREATE WORK AND ALSO A CLASSROOM SPACE FOR ME TO DO AS -- WHATEVER I PLEASE.
SO I'VE DECIDED TO CREATE THIS KIND OF PROP WITHIN THE CLASSROOM SO THAT PEOPLE CAN READ A LITTLE BIT OF MY THINKING AND WHAT I'M INTERESTED IN AND WANT TO TALK ABOUT AND THERE ARE PROMPTED QUESTIONS FOR PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE IN IF THEY CHOOSE TO.
I THINK THAT GRIEF UNITES IT BECAUSE IT IS SOMETHING WHETHER WE WANT TO GO THROUGH IT OR NOT, WE ALL GO THROUGH.
WE ALL EXPERIENCE IT IN SOME TYPE OF DEGREE AND IN THAT THOUGHT WE COULD ALSO POTENTIALLY HELP EACH OTHER WITHIN THAT PROCESS AS WELL.
AND I WANT TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO NOT JUST CELEBRATE PEOPLE WHEN THEIR GONE, BUT THINK ABOUT HOW COULD WE CELEBRATE OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER WHILE WE'RE STILL HERE.
IT JUST REALLY MAKES ME HAPPY THAT THE ENTIRE WALL IS ALMOST FILLED.
THAT JUST SOLIDIFIES THE FACT THAT PEOPLE DID NEED THIS AND I WAS HAPPY TO USE THIS SPACE AND OPPORTUNITY TO FACILITATE THAT FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
WORK COULD COME IN MANY DIFFERENT SHAPES OR FORMS, YOU KNOW.
AND AS AN ARTIST, I JUST WANT TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND -- AND MAKE THINGS THAT ARE RELEVANT.
TO ME AND THE TIME AND THE PEOPLE AND THE COMMUNITY THAT IS AROUND ME.
