>> THIS TIME ON BROAD & HIGH.
AN ENCHANTING VOCALIST, AND EDUCATOR.
COMMUNITY-ORIENTED ART, AND SPACE.
THIS, AND MORE RIGHT NOW ON BROAD & HIGH.
>> WELCOME TO BROAD & HIGH.
I'M YOUR HOST, KATE QUICKEL.
AS A PRACTITIONER OF THE MOBILE ART.
THE SHINING SOPRANOS VOICE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS RICH, FLUID, AND POWERFUL.
THE BROAD & HIGH TEAM MET UP WITH HER AT OHIO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY'S WHERE SHE'S THE DIRECTOR OF LOCAL AND --TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER JOURNEY.
>> I DID NOT SING IN A CHOIR AT SCHOOL.
I SANG IN A CHURCH CHOIR, AND AT ONE POINT I EVEN DIRECTED THE CHURCH CHOIR.
I WAS SO BAD, THEY GAVE ME ONE CHURCH CHOIR SOLO.
GIRL, THEY NEVER GAVE ME ANOTHER ONE, BECAUSE I WAS HORRIBLE.
I WAS HORRIBLE.
BUT, I WAS JUST NOT A GOSPEL SINGER.
SO, LAST YEAR MY TEACHER TOOK ME TO AND I GOT TO DO A SOLO ENSEMBLE.
THE FIRST TIME IT WAS MY FIRST CLASSICAL SONG, AND MY FIRST ITALIAN SONG.
>> I DID MY FIRST SEMESTER OF COLLEGE, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WANTED TO DO.
SO, I HAD THESE HODGEPODGE CLASSES.
ALL THESE CLASSES.
I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF I TOOK A MUSIC CLASS DURING THAT TIME.
BUT, THE CHOIR STARTED.
THE CHURCH CHOIR STARTED TOURING.
I WAS GOING WITH THEM, BUT WASN'T DOING ANY HOMEWORK.
SO, ENDED UP ON PROBATION.
HAD NEVER BEEN ON PROBATION WITH GRADES BEFORE.
I NEEDED AN EASY A CLASS.
SO, THE NEXT SEMESTER I HEARD THE DIRECTOR IN MY EAR SAYING, IF YOU EVER HAVE A CHANCE TO DO VOICE LESSONS.
SO, I WENT DOWN THE CATALOG.
AND I SAW VOICE COMMAND I THOUGHT, THAT CAN'T BE TOO DIFFICULT, RIGHT?
SO, I TOOK VOICE LESSONS.
16 WEEKS, THEY TAUGHT ME TO BREATHE, AND ONE SONG.
AND I'LL NEVER FORGET THAT.
I PRETENDED LIKE I WAS THIS LITTLE OLD LADY THAT WENT TO MY CHURCH.
>> WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I USED TO TELL MY BROTHER, I AM MUSIC, YOU KNOW?
AND HE'S LIKE, NO YOU'RE NOT.
YOU JUST DO MUSIC.
>> I REMEMBER WHEN THEY CALLED ME, AND I SAID I GOT HERE CONFUSED BY ACCIDENT.
I NEVER IMAGINED THIS.
THERE'S NOBODY IN MY FAMILY THAT I COULD LOOK TO THAT THE PLAUSIBLE SINGER.
A COUPLE OF CHURCH PEOPLE IN MY CHURCH ORGANIZATION THAT WERE CLASSICAL SINGERS.
FOR ME, IT'S THE DIGGING OF YOURSELF.
IT'S YOUR MIND, BODY, SOUL, AND SPIRIT THAT HAPPENS WHEN I DO MUSIC.
AND IT'S WHETHER I'M SINGING.
WHETHER I'M TEACHING.
WHETHER I'M COACHING.
IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER.
I'M GIVING ALL OF ME.
AND THERE IS NO OTHER FEELING LIKE IT.
IT HAS MADE ME THE MOST HAPPY.
THE MOST JOYFUL, BUT IT'S ALSO MADE ME THE MOST SAD, AND I HAVE CRIED.
IT'S BEEN ALL OF ME.
EVEN MY JOB HERE AT OHIO CHRISTIAN.
IT TAKES EVERYTHING.
AND MY STUDENTS, I LOVE THEM.
I LOVE THEM TO THEIR POTENTIAL.
YOU KNOW, I'M PUSHING THEM CONSTANTLY.
YOU KNOW, I ALSO WORKED FOR COLUMBUS.
AND IT'S THE SAME THING.
BEING ABLE TO GIVE TO THE COMMUNITY, AND FIGURE OUT WAYS TO MAKE THINGS MAKE OPERA ACCESSIBLE TO THE COMMUNITY.
I THINK WHEN PEOPLE COME TO HEAR ME OR ANY ARTISTS SAYING, THEY COME FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT PLACES.
AND THEY'VE GOT SO MANY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS.
SO MANY DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES.
I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE ARE COMING, SO THAT THEIR WORLD -- AT LEAST FOR THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME COULD COME TOGETHER.
THE WORLD IS IN LINE.
THE WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL, AND GOOD.
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO TOUCHING PEOPLE.
TOUCHING THEIR HEARTS.
TOUCHING THEIR SOLOS.
AND FOR SOME OF THEM, CHANGING THEIR LIVES.
SO, THAT THEY ARE NEVER THE SAME WHEN THEY LEAVE.
>> CHIBA IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE.
IT'S AN INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL PLACE.
AND EVEN JUST THE EXPERIENCE TOOK MY MIND, AND SOUL, AND SPIRIT.
OH, THE TEACHING THOUGH.
MY LORD.
THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WERE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.
THEY WERE TRAINED REALLY WELL.
BUT, THIS MUSIC.
IT WAS NOT JUST TRAINING AT THE SCHOOL.
THIS IS IN THEIR BONES.
IN THEIR SPIRIT.
IN THEIR HEART, AND EVERY MOVEMENT.
AND THESE YOUNG PEOPLE HAD HUGE HEARTS.
AND SOME STUFF I WOULD SAY, I THOUGHT THEY WOULD THINK THAT WAS KIND OF WEIRD, AND STRANGE.
NO.
THEY WERE READY TO TRY IT, BECAUSE THEY WERE THAT HUNGRY FOR THE MUSICAL.
FOR THE TRAINING.
>> THE PEOPLE ARE INCREDIBLY KIND, AND I LOVED MAKING THAT CONNECTION.
EVEN WHEN I SAYING.
IT DIDN'T MATTER IF THEY KNEW WHAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT.
WE COULD CONNECT.
SOMETIMES I SAW PEOPLE WITH TEARS IN THEIR EYES.
THEN I HAD TEARS IN MY EYES, BECAUSE OF THAT CONNECTION.
>> TO HEAR MORE, YOU CAN FIND DION ON FACEBOOK AT DION PARKER BENNETT.
>> WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU COMBINE CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, AND EXHIBITIONS IN A BUILDING WHOSE ORIGINAL PURPOSE WAS TO MAKE CANNONBALL IS?
AS PART OF COLUMBUS RECREATION AND PARKS, THIS ART CENTER HAS RESOURCES FOR ALMOST ANYONE TO GET CREATIVE.
>> JOINING ME IN THE KITCHEN TODAY IS TODD KEMP FROM THE PRISCILLA ARTIST TYSON CULTURAL ARTS CENTER.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
I'D LOVE TO HEAR A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER.
>> SO, THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER IS AN ART MAKER SPACE, AND THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN.
IN A VERY HISTORIC BUILDING THAT WAS ONCE THE ARMORY FOR THE STATE OF OHIO.
WE HAVE ABOUT 80 CLASSES PER WEEK, AND 1000 STUDENTS COME COMING UP TO VISIT US EACH WEEK.
>> IT'S SUCH AN INCREDIBLE BUILDING.
>> THE ARCHITECTURE IS EXTREMELY UNIQUE TO THE DOWNTOWN AREA.
IT'S ONE OF THE OLDEST BUILDINGS IN THE DOWNTOWN.
RIGHT NEXT TO VERY MODERN ARCHITECTURE.
>> GREAT.
I'M EXCITED TO HEAR MORE.
ALSO, VERY INTRIGUED ABOUT THESE DELICIOUS INGREDIENTS.
I KNOW WHAT THEY ADD UP TO.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
WERE GOING TO MAKE MY ALMOST FAMOUS GUACAMOLE.
THAT I LEARNED TO MAKE IN THE YUCATAN AREA IN MEXICO.
DOING A COOKING CLASS.
IT USES FRESH INGREDIENTS, AND IT'S SUPER YUMMY.
>> RIGHT FROM THE SOURCE.
IT SOUNDS AMAZING.
TELL US WHAT WE WILL NEED FROM THE RECIPE.
>> WE WILL NEED THREE RIPE AVOCADOS, CREME FRESCHE, OR SOUR CREAM.
TWO LIMES, RED ONION, SOME GARLIC, SALT AND PEPPER, CUMIN, CILANTRO, AND TOUCHING.
THAT IS OF THE SECRET INGREDIENT.
>> IT SOUNDS DELICIOUS.
I CAN'T WAIT TO MAKE GUACAMOLE.
BUT, I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE POLITICAL --INCREDIBLE FACULTY.
>> WE HAVE FACULTIES THAT COME TO US FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ACTUALLY.
WE HAVE INTERNATIONAL FACULTY.
WE HAVE LOCAL FACULTY AS WELL.
MOST OF WHICH WORK AT THE CAD.
OSU.
THEY ARE ACCOMPLISHED ARTISTS IN THEMSELVES.
SO, IT'S A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR FOLKS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, AND ALL SKILL LEVELS TO COME, AND TAKE A CLASS.
ALSO, YOU CAN --IF YOU ARE NOT ABOUT TAKING CLASSES, WE HAVE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE GALLERY.
WE HAVE GALLERY EXHIBITS THAT HAPPEN.
EVERY SIX WEEKS THOSE CHANGE OUT.
WE HAVE AN ARTIST AND RESIDENT PROGRAM.
AND WE ALSO HAVE THE CONVERSATIONS, AND COFFEE.
WHICH HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT 38 YEARS.
>> TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT PROGRAM.
>> CONVERSATIONS AND COFFEE HAPPENS EVERY THURSDAY FROM NOON TO 1:00.
ARTISTS COME IN, AND TALK ABOUT THEIR PROCESS.
THEY DO DEMONSTRATIONS, AND IT COULD BE A MUSICIAN.
IT COULD BE A CULINARY ARTIST.
IT COULD BE A DANCER OR A VISUAL ARTIST.
AND THEY TALK FOR AN HOUR, AND EXPLAIN THEIR PROCESS.
>> HEALTHONE.
YOU MENTIONED ANY SKILL LEVEL.
IS THERE AN AGE RANGE OF THEIR CLASSES THAT THEY TYPICALLY FOLLOW?
>> UP TO 18, AND OVER.
THE COLUMBUS RECREATION AND PARKS DEPARTMENT HAS 29 IN CENTERS ACROSS THE COLUMBUS AREA FOR ALL AGES.
AND WE ARE SPECIFIC TO 18, AND OVER FOR OUR POPULATION.
>> MAKES SENSE.
I'VE TAKEN A CERAMICS CLASS THERE.
SO, IT'S REALLY FUN.
THERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
I THINK WE SHOULD GET STARTED ON GUACAMOLE.
RIGHT IN FRONT OF US.
>> I GUESS TO START OUT, I'M GOING TO DO SOME SHOPPING HERE, AND WE WILL GET STARTED WITH OUR RED ONION.
>> DO YOU HAVE A STRATEGY?
>> NO STRATEGY, AND THE WAY THAT I COOK IS THE WAY I MAKE MY OWN ART AS AN ARTIST.
SO, WHEN I PAINT --I'M A PAINTER PRIMARILY.
WHEN I DO MY PAINTINGS, IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT.
THE SAME WAY FOR COOKING.
>> I COULD TURN OUT DIFFERENT THIS TIME THAN IT WILL THE NEXT TIME.
>> ABSOLUTELY, AND THAT'S THE FUN OF IT ALL.
>> YEAH.
>> WE WILL START BY PEALING THIS OUTSIDE SKIN OFF OF THE ONION.
AND WE WILL GET DOWN TO THE GOOD STUFF, WHICH IS THE GOOD SIDE.
AND WERE JUST GOING TO TAKE A LITTLE OFF THE EDGE HERE.
A COUPLE OF SLICES.
RED ONION CAN BE A LITTLE BIT OVERPOWERING.
SO, IT DEPENDS ON THE POTENCY THAT YOU PREFER.
BUT, YOU CAN ADD MORE OR LESS.
WERE GOING TO ADD IT TO OUR BOWL.
WERE GOING TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF JALAPENO.
AND I LIKE TO JUST ADD THE SEEDS RIGHT IN.
I DON'T TAKE THE SEEDS OUT.
BUT, AGAIN THE AMOUNT THAT YOU USE IS UP TO YOU.
AND THE SEASONS JUST ADD A LITTLE BIT OF KICK.
A LITTLE BIT OF JALAPENO.
>> IT SMELLS SO FRESH, AND BRIGHT.
AND IT'S SO COMFORTABLE.
>> AND WERE GOING TO GET INTO OUR AVOCADOS.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THE WAY WE DO THIS IS CUT DOWN THE CENTER.
AND I'M GOING TO LET YOU IN ON THE MILLION-DOLLAR TRICK HERE IN JUST A SECOND.
WRIGGLING TO TAKE THE KNIFE, AND JUST CUT SOME CUBES.
JUST LIKE THIS.
I DON'T LIKE TO MASH MY AVOCADOS.
I LIKE TO JUST LEAVE THEM CHUNKY.
TAKE A SPOON, AND JUST GET THAT OUT OF THERE.
THIS IS A NICELY RIPE AVOCADO.
AND HERE'S THE TRICK.
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THIS SEED, AND WERE GOING TO APPLY IT TO OUR MIXTURE.
>> WHAT?
WHAT DOES THAT DO?
>> AND THIS KEEPS IT FROM TURNING BROWN.
SO, THAT PLUS THE LIME DRINKS KEEPS IT FROM TURNING BROWN.
>> DO YOU MOVE IT AROUND WITH YOUR CHIP?
>> I DO.
ESPECIALLY, WHEN IT'S IN THE REFRIGERATOR.
I KEEP IT IN THERE JUST TO KEEP IT FRESH.
>> TO YOU AT THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER TO THE CLASSES?
HOW DOES THAT WORK?
>> YEAH.
WE HAVE OUR WERE UP AND 80 CLASSES.
BUT, WHAT IS REALLY NICE IS WE OFFER WORKSHOPS IN THE SUMMERTIME.
SO, WE WILL HAVE ARTISTS COME IN FOR A WEEK AT A TIME, AND I'M IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING THAT SCHEDULE.
BUT, WE DO VISITING ARTISTS WORKSHOPS FOR A WEEK.
WHICH IS MORE INTENSIVE IN NATURE, AND WE GET TO BRING ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY.
>> OH, ISN'T THAT SPECIAL?
>> THE GARLIC IS GOING TO BE NEXT, AND I'M GOING TO GIVE IT A LITTLE SMASH.
AND THEN TO GIVE IT A LITTLE TRACTION, I'M GOING TO ADD SOME SALT.
RIGHT ON TOP OF IT LIKE THIS.
AND THEN I'M GOING TO USE THAT SALT TO MUSH THIS GARLIC DOWN INTO MORE OF A PASTE.
SO, YOU DON'T HAVE BIG, GIANT CHUNKS OF GARLIC.
BUT, IT'S MORE OF A PASTE.
YEAH.
NOW -- >> CILANTRO.
>> CILANTRO, THERE YOU GO.
>> I LOVE CILANTRO.
IT TASTES LIKE SOAP FOR SOME PEOPLE.
>> I JUST REALLY LIKE IT.
>> GLAD IT TASTES GOOD TO ME.
LOVE IT.
>> THAT GOES RIGHT IN.
SO, WERE GOING TO PUT A LITTLE LIME JUICE.
LET'S GO THIS WAY.
JUST RIGHT IN ON TOP.
GET IN THE PARTY RIGHT THERE.
ALL RIGHT.
SO, NEXT WE ARE GOING TO ADD IN SOME CUMIN.
AND WE ARE GOING TO DO A NICE COUPLE PINCHES OF THAT.
A LITTLE BIT OF THAT SALT AGAIN.
AND THIS IS TAJIN.
WHICH IS REALLY THE SECRET INGREDIENT.
>> OH, YEAH.
THAT'S NICE.
IT IS VERY BRIGHT, AND CITRUSY.
PERFECT FOR THIS.
>> OKAY.
SO, NOW ARE GOING TO GIVE THIS A LITTLE CREAM BASE, AND WERE GOING TO ADD IN THE FRESH CREAM OR THIS COULD BE SOUR CREAM.
BUT, THIS JUST GETS A LITTLE SPOON IN THERE.
>> INTERESTING.
>> AND THEN WERE GOING TO JUST LIGHTLY TURN THIS.
BECAUSE WE WANT THOSE CHUNKS TO STAY BIG.
AND WERE JUST GOING TO TURN IT AROUND LIKE THIS.
>> SO EASY TO PULL TOGETHER, AND GORGEOUS.
>> YEAH, AND THAT'S IT.
>> I HEAR YOU GOT ONE LAST FLOURISH.
>> YES.
BEFORE WE EAT THIS WITH THE CHIPS STILL WARM, WE GOT TO GIVE IT A LITTLE BIT OF LIME ACROSS THE TOP.
JUST SQUEEZE THAT RIGHT ON THERE.
AND THEN SOME OF THIS REALLY NICE SALT JUST GOES RIGHT ON TOP.
FINISHES IT OFF.
AND THE WARM CHIPS JUST ABSORB ALL OF THAT FLAVOR.
AND NOW WE ARE READY.
>> MY GOSH, YOU ARE A GUACAMOLE GENIUS.
I LOVE IT.
>> BEFORE WE DIG INTO THIS DELICIOUS DIP, WHAT'S ONE MORE THING YOU WOULD LIKE FOLKS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER?
OR, MORE THAN ONE.
>> I MENTIONED EARLIER THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM.
THAT'S A NEW ONE TO US.
IT COMES TO US WITH HELP FROM THE OHIO ARTS COUNCIL.
AND WE CHOOSE TWO ARTISTS PER YEAR WITH A PANEL THAT THEY GET TO COME FOR 16 WEEKS.
HAVE THEIR OWN STUDIO SPACE, AND CREATE NEW WORKS OF ART.
AND GET TO HAVE AN EXHIBITION AT THE END.
>> THAT'S SO COOL.
WHAT A GREAT PROGRAM.
>> IT'S OUR 501(C)(3) GROUP.
AND THEY HELP WITH THE ORGANIZATION OF SOME OF THE CLASSES, AND SOME OF THE FUNDING THAT WE DO.
THEY DO FUNDRAISERS, AND HELP US TO DO WHAT WE DO BEST.
>> THAT'S SO CRUCIAL, AND I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE YOU GUYS HAVE AN AMAZING GIFT SHOP.
IT'S LOVELY.
>> IT'S FANTASTIC.
IT'S A REALLY GOOD PLACE TO SEE THE BREATH OF WHAT HAPPENS IN ALL THE CLASSES.
THAT'S GOOD.
AND THE REASONABLY PRICED, AND THE ARTISTS THAT MAKE THEM ARE THE STUDENTS, AND FACULTY INSIDE THAT BUILDING.
>> SUCH A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY.
LET'S EAT SOME GUACAMOLE.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
THANK YOU.
>> LET'S DIG IN.
