>> WE HAVE BEEN MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME.
OUR FIRST PERFORMANCE, FORMALLY, WAS IN 2007.
BUT WE WERE IN COLLEGE TOGETHER AT STEFAN UNIVERSITY IN CENTRAL FLORIDA, THAT IS WHERE WE MET.
WE STARTED DATING IN NOVEMBER, AND I THINK IN NOVEMBER WE STARTED MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER.
YEAH.
SO THE PROCESS, BECAUSE WE ARE A FLUTIST AND A SAXOPHONIST, FINDING MUSIC WRITTEN FOR THAT COMBINATION HAS BEEN THE SORT OF THE FOCAL POINT OF WHAT WE DO NOW, BECAUSE THAT COMBINATION IS NOT A TRADITIONAL, NORMAL INSTRUMENTATION AND CLASSICAL MUSIC.
SO, AS SUCH, WE HAVE DONE TWO THINGS.
WE HAVE DONE TRANSCRIPTIONS OF OTHER WORKS, OF OLDER CLASSICAL MUSIC.
AND WE ALSO HAVE CHAMPIONED THIS SORT OF, OUR MISSION TO MISSION AND WORK WITH LIVING COMPOSERS.
SO, WE PLAY THE MUSIC OF TODAY, OF COMPOSERS WHO ARE ALIVE AND WORKING.
WE ARE WRITING ABOUT WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE ALIVE TODAY.
AND THAT'S GREAT, BECAUSE THOSE COMPOSERS ARE OUR FRIENDS, OUR NEIGHBORS.
THEY LIVE IN EVERY COMMUNITY, THEY ARE EVERY TYPE OF PERSON.
THEY SHARE EXPERIENCES, HUMAN EXPERIENCES THAT ARE SO DIVERSE AND TELL THE HUMAN STORY IN SO MANY UNIQUE WAYS.
>> AND I THINK OUR ARTISTIC PROCESS CAN BE SIPHONED DOWN INTO ONE WORD.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN TELL THIS, BUT THE WORD IS PASSION.
SO THIS IS REALLY GOOD.
THIS IS REALLY GOOD FOR MUSIC MAKING.
IT ALSO MEANS THAT WE HAVE GOT REALLY, REALLY SET IDEAS ABOUT MUSIC AND THE MUSIC THAT WE WANT TO CREATE, AND WHAT IT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE.
AND SO, OUR PROCESS LOOKS LIKE MAD SESSIONS OF PLANNING, AND THIS IS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO COMMISSION AND IT'S GOING TO BE THIS, AND IT LOOKS LIKE FURIOUS SCRIBBLING, OUR HAIR IS NUTS, AND HE IS A PAINTER, HE PAINTS ALL OVER.
I GET VERY PINK IN THE FACE.
THIS PERSON AND THIS PERSON.
THAT IS ON THE CONCEPT SIDE.
AND ON THE WORKSITE, BECAUSE IT DOES TAKE A LOT OF WORK.
A LOT OF SITTING AND WORKING THROUGH THE MUSIC.
OUR BIG JOKE IS THAT WE AREN'T MARRIED WHEN WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF REHEARSAL.
SO WE CAN BE AS MUCH LIKE NO, THAT'S WRONG, YOU ARE WRONG.
THAT'S THE WRONG WAY TO DO THAT.
WE ARE GOING TO APPROACH THIS ANOTHER WAY.
AND AT THE END IT IS ALWAYS REALLY CUTE, LIKE WE ARE MARRIED AGAIN.
BUT IT'S ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD FOR OUR PROCESS, BECAUSE WE ARE PASSIONATE HUMAN BEINGS, AND THAT, TO GO BACK TO WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT, PASSION IS INTRINSIC TO MUSIC AND ART MAKING, AND THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE.
SO IT MAKES SENSE THAT IT NEEDS TO BE PRESENT IN THE MUSIC MAKING.
>> WHEN WE ARE PRACTICING, WHEN WE ARE PERFORMING TOGETHER, SO MUCH A PART EMOTION IS BASED OFF OF WHAT THE MUSIC IS TELLING US.
HOW YOU MOVE THE MUSIC.
THE MUSIC SORT OF TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO.
>> MUSIC REALLY IS A DIALOGUE.
IT'S VERY MUCH A PARTNERSHIP, SO IT IS PERFECT IN THIS SCENARIO.
BECAUSE GENERALLY WE ARE JUST HAVING A CONVERSATION.
IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE A MUSICAL CONVERSATION.
AND I THINK WE SEEK THAT OUT AS PART OF OUR CREATIVE PROCESS AS WELL, WE SEEK OUT THE GIVE AND TAKE AMMA AND WHEN WE ARE TALKING OVER EACH OTHER AND WHEN IT IS MY TURN TO TALK AND WHEN IT IS YOUR TURN TO TALK AND WHEN IT IS YOUR TURN TO SING AND MY TURN, I THINK THAT'S ACTUALLY REALLY SPECIAL.
I'M ACTUALLY A BIG PART OF IT.
>> YEAH, I THINK THAT COLLABORATION, LIKE IN REHEARSAL.
HOW WE TALK ABOUT THE MUSIC WE ARE MAKING.
HOW WE DECIDE WHEN TO COME OUT OF THE TEXTURE, WIND UP A LOT OF TEXTURE, WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LINE.
I THINK THAT BACKGROUND WORK THAT IS DONE, BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF WORK IN MAKING MUSIC PREPARED.
BUT WE NEVER WANT TO FEEL LIKE WHEN WE WERE PERFORMING, THAT WAS A LOT OF WORK.
THAT WAS HARD.
WE WANTED TO FEEL LIKE THAT WAS FUN, THAT WAS ENJOYABLE, LISTEN TO HOW BEAUTIFUL THAT IS.
BUT THAT TAKES BACKGROUND REHEARSAL, EFFORT, PRACTICE, STUDY, DISCUSSION.
BEYOND JUST BEING MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS, WE ARE ALSO TEACHERS.
SO TEACHING IS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE, AND PEOPLE BEYOND THE PERSON YOU ARE TEACHING EVEN IN THAT MOMENT.
SO THE BEST PART FOR ME ABOUT BEING IN THE PERFORMING ARTS IS THE HUMAN ELEMENT, THE PEOPLE AMMA RELATIONSHIPS.
>> THIS WAS ONE OF PROBABLY THE BEST EXPERIENCES, LIKE EVENTS OF BEING IN CUBA.
THE STUDENTS, NOT ONLY WHERE THEY SO EXTREMELY TALENTED, AND SO PASSIONATE AND SO EXCITED TO MAKE MUSIC, BUT THEY ARE ALSO SO HUNGRY TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY.
TO HEAR YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
THEY ARE SO OPEN TO YOUR IDEAS.
IN FACT, A LOT OF THEM I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH SINCE CUBA, WHICH IS REALLY SO EXCITING.
A LOT OF THEM ARE EXCITED ABOUT THEIR FUTURES, SO IT KIND OF GOES AWAY YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT LEGACY, AND ABOUT EXPANSION WHERE IT IS A BIT OF A BUTTERFLY EFFECT.
>> WHEN WE FINISH THE MASTER CLASS WHERE THEY WERE PERFORMING FOR ME, AND I WAS OBVIOUSLY DEMONSTRATING AND PLAYING FOR THEM AND WITH THEM.
AFTER THAT I ASKED IF THERE WAS A MOMENT WHERE THEY HAD QUESTIONS WHILE I WAS PACKING UP MY INSTRUMENT, THINKING OH, WE ARE AT THE END.
AND THEN EVERY HAND ROSE, AND I WAS LIKE WOW, KIND OF OVERWHELMED WITH HOW MUCH, IT WAS KIND OF A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT BECAUSE IT WASN'T JUST LIKE OKAY, THE MASTER CLASS IS OVER, WE ARE STUDENTS WHO WANT TO GO DO OUR FUN THING OR HANG OUT WITH HER FRIENDS.
THEY WANTED MORE.
IT WAS OVER AND THEY WANTED MORE.
AND I STAYED A LITTLE LONGER, AND WE HAD TO BE SOMEWHERE, AND THE PEOPLE WE WERE WITH LIKE WE GOT TO GO, WE'VE GOT TO GO.
AND I AM LIKE I AM TEACHING, I AM TEACHING.
YOU HAVE TO BE HERE WITH THESE STUDENTS.
IT WAS JUST A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT.
>> IT'S THE PEOPLE.
IT IS ALWAYS THE PEOPLE.
EVERY RELATIONSHIP IS A NEW ONE.
IT IS AN EXCITING ONE.
BECAUSE I DO A LOT OF TEACHING AND ALSO A LOT OF PERFORMING, I ALSO MEET MUSICIANS IN DIFFERENT STAGES OF THEIR LIVES.
YOUNG PEOPLE ARE JUST AS EXCITING TO MEET AS THE WISE ARTISTS THAT HAVE BEEN ON THE SCENE FOREVER AND HAVE SO MUCH TO SHARE.
IT IS COMMUNITY, REALLY.
I THINK THAT IS PROBABLY WHAT DRAWS ME TO BEING AN ARTIST ANYWAY, AND TEACHING DOES ALSO FEEL SORT OF LIKE YOU ARE ON A STAGE.
SO THEY ARE KIND OF EQUAL PARTS, AND THE STAGE DOESN'T HAPPEN IN LESS THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE.
I DON'T MAKE MUSIC IN A VACUUM.
DEFINITELY THE PEOPLE.
>> FOR ME, THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING A PERFORMING ARTS MUSICIAN IS ALSO THE PEOPLE.
MUSIC IS ABOUT PEOPLE.
IT IS ABOUT THE POWER THAT TRANSCENDS LANGUAGE, AND PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD, AND EXPRESSING OURSELVES, BUT ALWAYS EXPRESSING HUMAN THINGS.
IT IS THE PEOPLE PART OF IT.

GO DEEP INSIDE THE CAMPUS OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN DAYTON, OHIO, IN A PLACE WHERE THE SOUND OF MUSIC COMES ALIVE.
IT IS HOME TO AN INNOVATIVE LAB THAT TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO BUILD THEIR OWN CUSTOM ELECTRIC GUITARS.
SIGHING, STANDING, STRINGING, AND EVEN A LITTLE PLAYING ARE ALL PART OF THIS HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE.
LET'S GO BEHIND THE SCENES TO LEARN HOW IT'S DONE.
>> A PROGRAM THAT STARTED OUT AS A NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT, THAT ALLOWS US AS A TEAM TO TEACH HOW TO USE THE ELECTRIC GUITAR, AS A VEHICLE TO TEACH THEM HOW TO GET THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL, VEHICLE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.
WE TEACH THE TEACHERS OVER THE WEEK OF TRAINING, AND THEY CAN TAKE IT TO THEIR SCHOOL AND USE THE KIDS THAT ARE PRODUCED HERE AT SINCLAIR, THAT ARE REALLY HIGH-QUALITY KITS.
SO THERE'S SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF THAT CAN KIND OF BE DERIVED FROM THIS PROGRAM.
WE ARE NOT HERE TO TRAIN JUST TEACHERS.
WE'RE TRYING TO GET A SOPHOMORE IN BOZEMAN, MONTANA TO UNDERSTAND THAT MISSES JOHNSON'S BIOLOGY CLASS HAS MERIT.
THERE'S TWO COMPONENTS TO THE PROGRAM.
THERE'S AN ACADEMIC COMPONENT THAT WAS FUNDED UNDER NATURAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT.
THAT WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CURRICULUM.
AND THE CURRICULUM CAN BE SCALED FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AS WELL AS UP TO UNIVERSITIES.
JUST DEPENDING ON WHAT IT IS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE STUDYING.
THE STEM GUITAR LAB WAS FORMULATED IN ORDER TO SUPPLY GUITAR KITS TO THE CLASSES THAT ARE RUNNING THOSE.
SINCLAIR HAS A UNIQUE PLACE IN THE NATIONAL STEM GUITAR FIELD, BECAUSE WE ARE THE PRODUCTION CENTER FOR THOSE KITS.
WE USE THE SAME CURRICULUM TO TEACH THE CLASS, BUT WE HAVE THE ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITY OF MAKING THE KIDS AND SHIPPING THEM OUT ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
STEM GUITAR HAS SHIPPED GUITAR KITS TO 48 STATES.
I THINK THE ONLY TWO STATES WE HAVE NOT HIT YET ARE NORTH AND SOUTH DAKOTA.
THEY HAVE EVEN SHIPPED SOME OF THE GUITAR KITS OVERSEAS.
WE SELL KITS TO SCHOOLS ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES, INCLUDING AMERICAN SAMOA, CANADA, OUR KIDS HAVE GONE DOWN TO COLUMBIA FOR OUTREACH PROGRAMS.
SO WITHOUT THE SINCLAIR GUITAR LAB, THERE WOULD BE NO STEM GUITAR.
>> HERE IS THE WORKSHOP PART OF OUR FACILITIES.
IT IS JUST OLD-FASHIONED WOODWORKING.
WE WILL GET A TRUCKLOAD OF RAW LUMBER, AND WE TAKE THOSE PIECES AND WE WILL CUT THEM INTO WHAT WE CALL BILLINGS.
THEY ARE DIFFERENT LENGTHS FOR DIFFERENT PARTS.
SO IF I'M BUILDING BODIES, I WILL CUT THAT BOARD DOWN INTO 22 INCH LONG PIECES, AND WILL STACK THEM ON THE RACK.
WHEN THAT IS COMPLETE, THEN WE WILL START TO ASSEMBLE A BODY, AND WE WILL PULL PIECES OFF OF THE RACK, AND THEN WE WILL PLANE THEM TO THICKNESS.
THEN WE WILL JOIN THOSE, WHICH IS WE WILL TRIM MANAGE SO THAT IT IS AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE TO THE FACE THAT WE JUST MADE, SO THAT WHEN WE PUT THEM TOGETHER THEY ARE TOGETHER AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE.
THIS PIECES ARE FITTED TOGETHER.
WE WILL COME BACK THE NEXT DAY AND TAKE THE SPEECHES OUT, WE WILL PLANE THEM TO THICKNESS AGAIN, WE WILL SEND THEM TO A SPECIFIC THICKNESS.
AND THEN WE WILL PUT THOSE IN A STASH THAT WILL GO OVER TO THE LABS.
FROM A BUILDER STANDPOINT, AND A WORKSHOP LIKE THIS, THE VERY FIRST THING PEOPLE DO IS TAKE THEIR BODIES, THEIR NECKS, THEIR FRET BOARDS.
SO THE PLAYING SURFACE.
SHAPING GET THE GUITAR BODIES, PATCHING THE FRETBOARD FOR THE NECK, AND SHAPING THE NECK AND GETTING THE FRETS INSTALLED IS ANOTHER MAJOR MILESTONE.
GETTING THE BODY ALL SMOOTHED OUT AND GETTING A CLEAR FINISH APPLIED TO IT TO PROTECT IT, THAT'S ANOTHER MAJOR TASK.
SOLDERING AND DOING THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS IS ANOTHER MAJOR PHASE OF THE PROJECT.
JOINING THE BODY AND NECK TOGETHER AND POPULATING THE BODY WITH ALL THE HARDWARE WOULD BE NEXT AFTER THAT.
AND FINALLY, STRINGING THE INSTRUMENT UP AND DOING THE FINAL SETTING TO GET IT TO TRANSLATE FROM LOOKING LIKE IT A GUITAR, TO PLAYING AND FUNCTIONING LIKE A TARP GUITAR SHOULD.
AND PICKING IT UP AND GIVING IT A TEST DRIVE.
>> A LOT OF INDIVIDUALS THINK, AND IT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN THE ENGINEERING FIELD, AND IN ANY FIELD, THAT YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO USE SOMETHING OR PLAY SOMETHING, IN THIS CASE PLAYING GUITAR.
A LOT OF INDIVIDUALS THINK THAT YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO DO THAT IN ORDER TO BUILD IT.
A COMMON ANALOGY THAT I LIKE TO USE IS THE INDIVIDUALS THAT BUILT THE SPACE SHUTTLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO FLY THE SPACE SHUTTLE.
BUT THEY CAN PUT THE SPACE SHUTTLE TOGETHER.
>> THE STEM GUITAR PROJECT IS HIGHLY ACCESSIBLE AT ALL LEVELS.
IN TERMS OF REQUISITE ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE, IT WILL TAKE ALL COMERS.
SO WHEREVER YOU ARE, THERE ARE WAYS TO MAKE CONNECTIONS.
SO I WOULD NOT SAY YOU HAVE TO HAVE HAD PHYSICS 101 IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT THIS COURSE.
AND THAT'S THE GREAT THING, IT IS ABOUT THE SKILL.
WHATEVER YOUR AUDIENCE IS, YOU CAN TAKE THE MATERIALS WE PROVIDE AND THE PROCESS WE ARE SHOWING YOU, AND MAKE CONNECTIONS THAT ARE RELEVANT TO THE STUDENTS BY SAYING HERE'S AN EXAMPLE ON THE GUITAR OF XYZ TOPIC THAT YOU NEED TO COVER IN CLASS THIS WEEK.
>> THE THING ABOUT MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, WE AS EDUCATORS HAVE GUIDELINES OF WHAT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARE HEADING THOSE GUIDELINES AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
BUT STUDENTS HAVE A HARD TIME SEEING THOSE GOALS AND THOSE ASPIRATIONS THAT THEY NEED.
SO IT ALLOWED ME TO BUILD MY OTHER CLASSES AROUND THIS ONE MODEL, TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE UNDERSTANDING WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING.
WHEN YOU SEE A STUDENT, GUITAR FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME THAT THEY BUILT, YOU CANNOT WIPE THE SMILE OFF THEIR FAITH WITH A FIRE HYDRANT.
IT IS JUST SO AMAZING.
>> I THINK WE TRY TO TELL PEOPLE THAT COME THROUGH THE PROGRAM, THE PLAY GUITAR, PLAY WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN.
GET PLUGGED IN WHERE YOU CAN.
IF YOU MOVE TO A NEW TOWN AND YOU CAN PLAY GUITAR, YOU CAN FIND FRIENDS REALLY QUICK.
IF YOU CAN FIX A GUITAR, YOU CAN FIND FRIENDS DOUBLE-CLICK.

THE GOAL HERE IS TO CONTINUE TO TEACH TEACHERS, NO MATTER WHETHER WE ARE GRANT FUNDED OR NOT.
WE WANT TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO KEEP THIS THING ROLLING AND GOING DOWN THE LINE, BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A GREAT THING.
NOT JUST IN OHIO.
IF YOU ARE WATCHING THIS FROM CALIFORNIA OR FLORIDA, THERE ARE TRAININGS POTENTIALLY NEAR YOU YOU CAN COME AND TAKE A PART OF.

IN TERMS OF ACTUAL GUITAR PROCESS ITSELF, I REALLY LIKE ALL THE QUIETER ASPECTS OF IT, THE FRETWORK AND WORKING ON THE NEXT AND EVERYTHING.
TO GET THE GUITAR FROM LOOKING LIKE AN INSTRUMENT TO ACTUALLY WORKING LIKE ONE.
>> BUILDING A GUITAR IS NOT AN EVERYDAY THING.
I DON'T WANT TO SAY IT'S NOT SIMPLE, BUT IF YOU PAY ATTENTION, IF YOU ASK QUESTIONS, THEN YOU WILL BE OKAY.
EVERY CLASS, AT THE END OF THE DAY, IF YOU WALK IN WITH 10 FINGERS AND YOU WALK OUT 10 FINGERS, IT'S A GOOD DAY.
