Today, we're looking at an aerial photograph of Columbus that we've dated to around 1924.
And aerial photographs can tell us a lot about the city and how it was developed when buildings came and went and how neighborhoods changed over time.
For this one, we've been able to date it to 1924 because primarily we see that the Neal House that's normally right here in the photograph is gone at this point.
So we know that the old Neal House was demolished in 1923 and the new one opened in 1925.
We can also see the cars along the street here and right over here, a little to the south, the Statehouse.
There's an empty lot where city hall would have been.
So city hall would have burned in 1921.
And then in 1928, the Ohio Theater opened on that site.
Also in this photograph, you can see Broad Street going back here, the Seneca Hotel up on the top.
And the neighborhood that's now in the Discovery District around CCAD and Columbus State.
Up here in the corner, you can see all of these houses.
That really gives us an understanding of that neighborhood at this time as well.
