Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship>>> There are many Major Taylor Cycling Clubs all over the world, but the very first one started here in Columbus in 1979.
There were a group of men who were looking at getting into cycling and at a bicycle shop they saw a 1978 issue of Midwest Bicycle Review, and that on the cover it had Marshall Major Taylor.
And they were intrigued.
They'd never heard of the black bicyclists from Indianapolis who became the world champion in cycling and 1899.
And they were impressed by his athleticism and his perseverance, even in the face of rampant racism to compete internationally and win.
So they named their bicycling club after him and they inspired many other groups to do that.
And now there's a Major Taylor Cycling International Alliance, and they have an annual conference.
And they've recognized our Major Taylor Cycling Club for making all of this possible.
