> >> WELCOME TO COLUMBUS ON THE RECORD, I AM MIKE THOMPSON.
SHERROD BROWN HAS BEEN BUSY SINCE LEAVING WASHINGTON IN JANUARY.
HE AND HIS WIFE BOUGHT A HOUSE IN BEXLEY.
THEY SAY THEY WANT TO BE CLOSER TO GRANDCHILDREN AND CONNIE SHULTZ'S JOB AT DENISON UNIVERSITY.
THIS WEEK, BROWN ANNOUNCED THE FORMATION OF THE DIGNITY OF WORK INSTITUTE.
THE GOAL, HE SAYS, IS TO HELP DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS BETTER UNDERSTAND THE LIVES OF AMERICAN WORKERS.
HE WILL DO POLLING, CONDUCT INTERVIEWS, AND DO OTHER ISSUES REPORTS.
IT WILL ALSO KEEP SHERROD BROWN IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS HE CONSIDERS WHETHER TO RUN FOR OFFICE AGAIN.
HE SAYS THIS IS FOR BOTH PARTIES, BUT HE ALSO SAYS THE DEMOCRATS HAVE TO DO A LOT OF WORK TO GET WORKING VOTERS BACK.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS EFFORT?
>> I THINK IT IS GREAT THAT SHERROD BROWN IS STAYING INVOLVED, HE OBVIOUSLY HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND WAS ONE OF THE TOP DEMOCRATS IN OHIO ELECTED FOR SOME TIME, BUT I WILL SAY, IT IS INTERESTING TO FOCUS ON POLICY, BECAUSE I THINK FOR THE PARTY, I'M NOT SO SURE WE HAVE A POLICY PROBLEM, I THINK WE HAVE MORE OF A POLITICAL PROBLEM, BOTH STATEWIDE AND NATIONALLY, AND BEING WILLING TO EMBRACE AN AGENDA THAT IS GOING TO MEANINGFULLY CHANGE PEOPLE'S ECONOMIC LIVES, TAKE ON SOME OF THE CONCENTRATION OF POWER IN THE ECONOMY, AND ALSO RECOGNIZE THE REAL ANTIESTABLISHMENT STRAIN THAT HAS TAKEN OVER A LOT OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF THIS COUNTRY, AND ESPECIALLY OHIO, THAT PEOPLE ARE VERY DISTRUSTFUL OF TRADITIONAL POLITICIANS.
SO, HOPEFULLY THAT WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE STRATEGY AS WELL.
>> I DON'T THINK OF AN INSTITUTE AND I DON'T THINK OF WORKING PEOPLE WHEN I THINK OF INSTITUTES, I THINK OF LEATHER CHAIRS, BUT WHAT DO WE EXPECT THIS INSTITUTE TO FIND?
THAT WORKERS ARE OVERPAID OR THAT UNIONS OVERREACH SOMETIMES?
>> WELL, FIRST OFF, IT IS A NONPROFIT THINK TANK, SO IT CAN'T REALLY EMBRACE POLITICS, WHETHER IT IS ALIGNED CLOSELY WITH HIS LONGTIME ISSUE OF WHAT WORKERS NEED.
AND I DO THINK THAT IT WILL FOCUS ON , YOU KNOW, OVER TIME FOR EMPLOYEES , MAYBE INCREASING THE MINIMUM WAGE, THOSE ARE SORT OF THE BREAD AND BUTTER.
MAYBE SOME OTHER LIKE TRADE POLICIES AND THINGS LIKE THAT THAT IMPACT WORKERS ACROSS THE BOARD, WE WILL SEE.
>> IT'S BASED HERE IN COLUMBUS, SARAH?
>> IT IS BASED HERE IN COLUMBUS, AND IT IS KIND OF LIKE READING TEA LEAVES IN THIS ELECTION, OF COURSE, BUT I AM GOING TO PULL THE QUOTE THAT YOU MENTIONED, HE IS TALKING ABOUT AMERICAN WORKERS.
HE IS NOT MAKING NOTE OF OHIOANS, HE IS STILL, IT SEEMS, FOCUSING ON A FEDERAL LANDSCAPE, SO IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO WHAT HE MIGHT BE RUNNING FOR IN 2026, MY BET WOULD BE CLOSER TO SENATE RIGHT NOW.
>> SO, WHAT IS THE REPUBLICAN PERSPECTIVE ON THIS, TERRY?
WHAT IS THE REAL PURPOSE OF THIS INSTITUTE?
>> IT IS CALLED POLITICS, SHERROD BROWN HAS BEEN ADDED SINCE THE 1970s IN POLITICS.
I HAVEN'T HEARD HIM SAY HOW MANY REPUBLICANS HE WAS GOING TO HIRE.
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS IS ABOUT POLITICS AND SHERROD KEEPING HIS OPTIONS OPEN.
I THINK IT IS GENUINELY UP IN THE AIR WHETHER HE IS LOOKING AT SENATE OR GOVERNOR OR MAYBE JUST DECIDES TO MOVE ON, BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE TO MAKE THAT DECISION NOW.
BUT CLEARLY, I HOPE USEFUL FULL DISCLOSURE AND TRANSPARENCY.
LET'S SEE WHERE ALL THE MONEY COMES, ANY DARK MONEY INVOLVED, WHO IS HIRED, WHAT IS SPENT, WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
>> SHERROD BROWN IS 70 TO THREE YEARS OLD, SHOULD MOVE ON, ALLOW YOUNGER FOLKS LIKE YOURSELVES TO MOVE INTO LEADERSHIP ROLES IN THE PARTY BUT IS IT TIME FOR SHERROD BROWN TO PUSH POLICY, BUT LET SOMEBODY ELSE CARRY THE FLAG?
>> I CERTAINLY DON'T SPEAK FOR WHAT SHERROD BROWN WANTS TO DO IN HIS PLANS, BUT IN TERMS OF THE VOTERS AND PEOPLE, WHERE I THINK A LOT OF OUR FOCUS NEEDS TO BE IN TERMS OF DEVELOPING STRATEGY, THAT POLLING HAS BEEN DONE, PEOPLE ARE REALLY FRUSTRATED WITH TRADITIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY, AND I THINK UNDER 30% APPROVAL RATING, AND IT DOES SEEM LIKE WE ARE LIVING IN TIMES WITH A VERY SIGNIFICANT SHIFT.
WE ARE NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO BE ABLE TO PERSUADE PEOPLE.
>> SHERROD TRIED IN THE LAST CAMPAIGN TO SPEND OVER $100 MILLION , HE IS ALL ABOUT THE DIGNITY OF WORK.
THAT BRAND IT DIDN'T SELL WELL THEN, WHAT HAS HE GOT NEW OR DIFFERENT ARE THE FUTURE?
>> THE DIFFERENCES HE ONLY LOST BY THREE OR FOUR POINTS IN A YEAR THAT TRUMP WON BY 11 OR 12, SO HE ACTUALLY RAN A GOOD CAMPAIGN AND GIVEN THE HEADWINDS HE FACED.
WHO ELSE DO THE DEMOCRATS HAVE RIGHT NOW?
>> RIGHT, SO, YES.
HE LOST BY LESS THAN HE COULD HAVE.
AND DEPENDING ON HOW THE MIDTERM HEADWINDS ARE, HE COULD MAKE A RUN AND MAYBE KNOCK OFF JOHN HOUSTON FOR SENATE OR RUN FOR GOVERNOR.
I KNOW HIS PEOPLE --A LOT OF HIS SUPPORTERS ARE WORKING FOR AMY RIGHT NOW, BUT HE COULD JUST JUMP RIGHT AND IF HE WANTED TO.
>> YEAH, I THINK AMY CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR CAME OUT THIS WEEK, EXPECT TO RAISE $600,000 IN THE FIRST QUARTER.
THEY SAY THAT IS MORE THAN SHERROD BROWN --NOT BROWN, TED STRICKLAND RAISED IN 2009.
OF COURSE, TED STRICKLAND ENDED UP LOSING IN 2009, 2010.
>> AMY HAS THE NAME, I. D. GOOD AS WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE, DEMOCRATS IN THIS STATE DON'T EVEN NECESSARILY HAVE A FRONT BENCH, SO AMY DOES HAVE A NAME I. D. THAT A LOT OF OTHER FOLKS WHO HAVE BEEN FLOODED FOR POTENTIALLY RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR AS A DEMOCRAT MAYBE DON'T HAVE, I AM SURE THAT IS SOME OF IT.
BUT OF COURSE, VIVEK RAMASWAMY IS RAISING A LOT OF MONEY AS WELL.
>> WHEN DOES SHERROD BROWN, MORGAN, WHEN DOES HE HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION ON WHETHER HE IS GOING TO RUN AT ALL, WHETHER HE IS GOING TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR OR U. S. SENATE, MAYBE SECRETARY OF STATE, GO BACK TO HIS ROOTS?
>> YEAH, I DON'T KNOW, I AGREE THAT YOU HAVE SOME TIME, AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE GOVERNORS RACE, I THINK IF THERE WERE GOING TO BE A NEW ENTRY FOR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE OTHER THAN AMY, THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING USEFUL FOR HER TO KNOW SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
BUT LOOK, AGAIN, I THINK MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE, BEYOND SPECIFIC RACES OR SENATE --SPECIFIC CANDIDATES IS THAT WE AS A DEMOCRATIC PARTY NEED TO BE LISTENING TO THE INFORMATION WE HAVE GOTTEN OVER THE LAST FEW ELECTION CYCLES AND DEVELOPING A STRATEGY THAT IS GOING TO MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY'RE AT, AND THE PEOPLE OF OHIO HAVE BEEN HUNGRY FOR A CHANGE FOR SOME TIME, YOU WANT OUTSIDERS, THEY DON'T LIKE TRADITIONAL POLITICIANS, AND THEY WANT TO SEE THEIR ECONOMIC PROSPECTS IMPROVE.
THAT IS WHERE WE NEED TO BE FOCUSED.
X AS A LITTLE FACTOID, IT IS STILL MORE THAN 13 MONTHS BEFORE THE MAY 2026 PRIMARY, LOTS OF TIME.
BUT I THINK PEOPLE ARE GOING TO LOOK MORE CAREFULLY AT THINGS THIS FALL, BUT IT IS A LONG WAYS OFF THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION RIGHT NOW.
>> YEAH, THE CANDIDATES WHO DON'T HAVE THE NAME I. D. OF AMY OR SHERROD BROWN, THEY WANT TO GET GOING UP AND >> IT SEEMS THE LONGER THAT SHERROD BROWN IS INDECISIVE ABOUT HIS NEXT MOVE, IT DELAYS OTHER DEMOCRATS JUMPING IN.
I THINK THAT THEY WANT COATTAILS.
>> BUT FOR STATEWIDE RACES, IT'S VERY EXPENSIVE, AND I DO AGREE THAT THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF PEOPLE SO FAR THAT WE KNOW THE DEMOCRATIC ORBIT WHO CAN RAISE THE TYPE OF RESOURCES TO BE ABLE TO MOUNT A VERY CREDIBLE STATEWIDE CAMPAIGN.
VIVEK RAMASWAMY IS IN A POSITION BECAUSE HE HAS INDEPENDENT WEALTH IN ADDITION TO TRUMP'S BACKING THAT UNLOCKS ALL SORT OF NEW RESOURCES, AND WE HAVEN'T REALLY HAD THAT COMPARABLE RESOURCE ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE, SO I THINK WE HAVE LIMITED OPTIONS.
>> WE SHALL SEE.
IT IS ALREADY ILLEGAL FOR NONCITIZENS TO VOTE.
A VERY TINY AMOUNT ARCOT TRYING TO DO SO.
PRESIDENT TRUMP WANTS EVERYONE TO PROVE THEY ARE A CITIZEN BEFORE THEY CAN CAST A BALLOT.
THE PRESIDENT ISSUED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER THIS WEEK THAT REQUIRES PEOPLE PROVIDE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP WHEN THEY REGISTER TO VOTE.
OHIO HAS BEEN TRYING TO ENACT THE SEDITION --CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS , THERE IS ALSO A BILL AT THE STATEHOUSE THAT WOULD REQUIRE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP BEFORE REGISTERING, BUT AGAIN, NONCITIZEN VOTING IS EXTREMELY WERE RARE.
OHIO HAS 8 MILLION REGISTERED VOTERS.
LAST YEAR, YOST INDICTED SIX PEOPLE FOR VOTING ILLEGALLY, AND ONE OF THEM WAS DEAD.
WHAT IS THIS GOING TO ME AND TO OHIO VOTING?
IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A NONISSUE, BUT THEY KEEP SAYING YOU HAVE TO PROVE WHAT YOU CAN'T PROVE.
NEXT I THINK THAT DONALD TRUMP SIGNING THE EXECUTIVE ORDER MAKES IT AN ISSUE, BECAUSE HE HAS SAID THAT, YOU KNOW, ENFORCING THIS RULE COMES WITH THE CARE OF CONTINUING TO GET YOUR FEDERAL FUNDING, SO, THE CARROT AND THE STICK IS THERE.
AND ALSO, IS EXECUTIVE ORDER SAYS THAT YOU CAN'T COUNT BALLOTS THAT ARRIVE AFTER ELECTION DAY, AND IN OHIO, AS LONG AS YOUR BALLOT IS POSTMARKED BY MONDAY BEFORE ELECTION DAY, HE CAN BE COUNTED , I THINK FOUR DAYS AFTER IT ARRIVES.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, THIS COULD DISENFRANCHISE A LOT OF PROCRASTINATORS .
AND CERTAINLY, IT COULD MEAN THAT IF YOU DEDICATE YOUR BALLOT IN, YOUR BALLOT WON'T BE COUNTED, OR YOU LIKE HAVE TO CARVE OUT TIME TO GO DRIVE TO THE ONLY DROPBOX IN THE COUNTY, YOU KNOW, AND GET IT IN.
>> AND THOSE EXTRA FOUR DAYS A BALLOTS COMING IN IN THE MAIL COULD DECIDE, WE HAVE SEEN VERY CLOSE ELECTIONS IN RECENT YEARS THAT THAT COULD COME TO PLAY.
SO, WHO SHOULD BE DOING THIS?
THIS GOES ONTO THE QUESTION, WHO SHOULD BE RUNNING ELECTIONS?
IS IT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OR IS IT THE STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, OR IS IT CONGRESS, THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH, WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THAT?
>> I THINK TO AN EXTENT, IT IS A BIT OF BOTH.
FOR A LOT OF THESE THINGS AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL THAT TRUMP IS TAKING ON, OR I DON'T KNOW, WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL, IT IS LOOKING AT THE ROLE OF FEDERAL OVERSIGHT OR SOMEHOW CURTAILING THE ROLE OF FEDERAL OVERSIGHT.
OF COURSE, ELECTIONS ARE RUN AT THE COUNTY LEVEL, AND THAT WE HAVE A STATE LEVEL THAT IS ALSO OVERSEEING THINGS, AND THE FEDERAL IS KIND OF A BACKSTOP IT IS NOT EVEN REALLY THAT MUCH MONEY THAT WE GET FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT ELECTIONS.
IT SEEMS MORE IMPORTANT YEAR FOR TRUMP IF HE IS MAKING A POLITICAL POINT, THIS IS AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY ARE TRYING AGAIN TO RALLY THE BASE , TO BREED FEAR OF IMMIGRANTS AND OUTSIDERS, AND THIS IS JUST NOT AN ACTUAL PROBLEM THAT IS IMPACTING MOST PEOPLE'S LIVES.
>> TO BE A LITTLE OLD-FASHIONED AND HISTORIC, THERE IS A THING CALLED THE U. S. CONSTITUTION AND IT IS IN ARTICLE ONE, SECTION 4, IT MAKES REAL CLEAR, THE STATE LEGISLATURE SHALL SET THE TIME OF THE ELECTIONS, SO IN A STATE LIKE OHIO WHERE WE HAVE ALREADY GOT A LOT OF THESE THINGS IN PLACE AND IN LAW PASSED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER IS REALLY NOT GOING TO MEAN NOT MUCH.
IT IS THE OTHER STEAKS, NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA, WHERE THEY DON'T WANT THAT KIND OF THING, WHERE I THINK THERE WILL BE FEDERAL JUDGES IN THIS CASE, WITH GOOD REASON, BECAUSE AGAIN, IT IS ARTICLE 1, IT ISN'T BURIED IN THE BILL OF RIGHTS, IT IS RIGHT ON THE TOP OF THE CONSTITUTION.
>> IN NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA AND A LOT OF THE THINGS, BUT THERE ARE SOME OTHER THINGS, AND THE OTHER INTERESTING ANGLE, I WAS TALKING TO FRANK LAROSE YESTERDAY, THE SECRETARY OF STATE, OHIO IS ALREADY PRETTY FAR DOWN THE LINE, BECAUSE THEY MATCH THE DMV RECORDS ON YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE, AND THAT HELPS TO VERIFY A LOT, AND I THINK THE FEDS WILL NOW COOPERATE MORE ON THE LIST TO DOUBLE CHECK AND CROSSCHECK.
BUT I THINK IN OHIO, THIS WON'T BE THAT IMPACTFUL.
>> AND I THINK HARRY MAKES AN INTERESTING POINT THERE, BECAUSE TRUMP IS MAKING SOME OF THESE THINGS AN ISSUE BY SIGNING THEM INTO EXECUTIVE ORDER, BUT A LOT OF TIMES, HE IS JUST PREEMPTING WHAT THE STATE LEGISLATURE IS ALREADY WORKING ON.
THE HIGHER EDUCATION OVERHAUL, TRUMP PUT IN SOME OF THE SAME EXECUTIVE ORDERS, AND LAWMAKERS HAVE BEEN DEBATING THIS PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP ISSUE FOR SIX MONTHS NOW.
THEY HAD A BILL LAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION AND IT HAS BEEN IN AND OUT AND IN THE TRANSPORTATION BUDGET BUT AT THIS POINT, IT IS IN, AND WE ARE WAITING ON WHAT GOVERNOR MIKE DeWINE DOES WITH IT.
>> AGAIN, SIX INDICTMENTS LAST YEAR, FIVE OF THEM WERE LIVING, FOR ILLEGAL VOTING.
THIS IS REALLY A SOLUTION LOOKING FOR A PROBLEM, RIGHT ?
>> I DISAGREE A LITTLE BIT, BECAUSE THE ONLY PROOF, I'VE BEEN ON THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS FOR 15 YEARS, ALL PEOPLE DO IS CHECK A BOX SAYING THEY ARE A CITIZEN.
IT ISN'T REALLY VERIFIED.
ON THE OTHER HAND, THE BOARDS OF ELECTIONS HAVE DATABASES, DMV, ET CETERA, WHERE THEY CAN CROSSCHECK AGAIN.
SO, THERE ARE A LOT OF PROTECTIONS, AND THE GOOD THING IS IN OHIO, THERE ARE LAWS AND PROCESSES THAT CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK THINGS, SO CHEATING IS PRETTY RARE, BUT IT IS NOT ANYTHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THAT SIGNIFICANT IN OHIO.
>> WE ARE HEARING FROM THE PRESIDENT THAT THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF, YOU KNOW, NONCITIZENS ARE VOTING AND THEY ARE COUNTING BALLOTS THAT SHOULDN'T BE COUNTED AFTER ELECTION DAY IS OVER.
IT UNDERMINES THE CONFIDENCE IN THE SYSTEM, FOR SOME PEOPLE ANYWAY.
>> YEAH, I JUST REALLY THINK THIS IS MORE OF A POLITICAL POINT FOR DONALD TRUMP, AND TO DISTRACT FROM THE LACK OF FOCUS ON WHAT MOST PEOPLE CARE ABOUT, AND I HATE TO KIND OF CONTINUE TO BE IN THE SAME DRUM, BUT ECONOMICS IS WHY HE WAS ELECTED, ECONOMICS IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE CARE ABOUT BUT A VAST MAJORITY IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THIS WILL DO NOTHING TO POSITIVELY IMPACT PEOPLE'S ECONOMIC LIVES.
X ALL RIGHT, IT IS A QUESTION PERHAPS AS OLD AS HIGHER LEARNING ITSELF.
IS GOING TO COLLEGE SIMPLY TO LEARN SPECIFIC SKILLS TO GET A GOOD JOB OR IS IT TO GAIN WIDE, DEEP KNOWLEDGE TO LIVE A BETTER LIFE IN GENERAL?
GOVERNOR DeWINE WANTS TO PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON GETTING A JOB.
HE PROPOSES THAT IN JOB PLACEMENT TO THE LIST OF THINGS THAT DETERMINE HOW MUCH MONEY PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES GET.
NOW, THE FORMULA IS BASED ON COURSE COMPLETION AND CERTIFICATES, BUT NOT JOB PLACEMENT.
CRITICS SAY THE ROLE WOULD DIMINISH THE VALUE OF LIBERAL ARTS DEGREES AND PAID COMMUNITY COLLEGES AGAINST UNIVERSITIES IN THE FIGHT FOR STATE FUNDING.
SARAH DONALDSON, WHY DOES THE GOVERNOR WANT JOB PLACEMENT TO BE ADDED TO THAT LIST OF CRITERIA?
>> I THINK IT IS REALLY IN LINE WITH A DRUM HE HAS BEEN BEATING FOR A WHILE, WHICH IS OHIO NEEDS THIS WORKFORCE TO FILL THESE JOBS IN PLACES LIKE INTEL AND ALL THESE PROJECTS ACROSS THE STATE THAT JOBS OHIO IS PRIORITIZING.
YOU DO HEAR THAT CONCERN FROM COLLEGES THAT HOW IS THIS GOING TO BE DETERMINED?
IS IT A SITUATION --WHAT QUALIFIES GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT?
IS IT GRADUATING AND GETTING A JOB AT A RESTAURANT SERVING TABLES?
IT IS A JOB, BUT NOT A JOB IN YOUR CHOSEN FIELD, SO I THINK THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT THIS PROCESS LOOKS LIKE, AND DO WINE HASN'T REALLY ELABORATED ON WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE, BUT HE SAYS HE DOESN'T FEEL IT WILL AFFECT NON-STEM MAJORS.
>> SO, WHAT HAPPENS IF A HISTORY MAJOR OR A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR CLOSE TO INTEL AND GETS A JOB THERE, WORKING AT THE PROCESSING PLANT?
DOES IT COUNT FOR THE COLLEGE?
>> THE ORIGINAL QUESTION IS YES AND YES.
WE NEED SMART STUDENTS, AS WELL AS PEOPLE TO HAVE SKILLS, AND I THINK THE IMPORTANT THING IS KEEPING PERSPECTIVE OUT OF THE $2.
1 BILLION OHIO IS GOING TO PUT INTO HIGHER ED, THIS WOULD ONLY INVOLVE $100 MILLION, 5%.
SO, I THINK AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THE BALANCE, HE LIKES ENGLISH MAJORS, BECAUSE THEY TEND TO BE SMART AND CAN COMMUNICATE.
SO, THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS HOW THE DETAILS OF IT ARE WRITTEN, BUT AGAIN, IT IS ONLY A 5% FACTOR, AND WE NEED TO KEEP THE BALANCE.
AND THE GOOD THING IS UNDER THIS GOVERNOR, THEY STARTED MOVING, INSTEAD OF JUST THE NUMBER OF BODIES IN A CHAIR IN THE UNIVERSITY, BUT IS THERE PROGRESS TOWARDS A DEGREE.
SO, I THINK OHIO HAS ALREADY MADE SOME OF US.
THIS IS ANOTHER STEP.
IF IT IS 5%, I DON'T THINK THAT IS TOO RISKY.
>> IS IT A BAD IDEA TO HAVE SOME ACCOUNTABILITY AT UNIVERSITIES , WHAT THEY ARE TEACHING STUDENTS RESULTS IN THEM GETTING A JOB AND MAKING A GOOD LIVING?
>> I DON'T THINK IT IS A CRAZY IDEA AT ALL TO HAVE SOME KIND OF STANDARD AROUND OR AT LEAST BE TRACKING WHAT THE JOB PROSPECTS ARE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE MOVING THROUGH OHIO'S HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION.
BUT WHAT I WOULD SAY IS IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TAKE MIKE DEWINE'S EFFORTS ON THIS FRONT WHEN WE HAVE HEARD VIRTUALLY NOTHING ON THE CUTS THAT ARE HAPPENING, WHO DO WE THINK IS ALSO IMPACTED BY THESE RESEARCH CUTS?
STUDENTS WERE BEING TRAINED BY SCIENTISTS WHO ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE FUNDING NECESSARILY TO RUN THEIR LIVES IN THE SAME WAY, IS THERE ANY MORE STRAIGHTFORWARD JOBS IN SCIENCE THAT CAN GO ON TO DEVELOP DRUGS?
THAT COULD IMPACT PEOPLE'S HEALTH?
SO YEAH, IS A GOOD TO HAVE SOME ACCOUNTABILITY?
SURE.
DO I THINK MIKE DeWINE IS MOST CONCERNED WITH CREATING THE BEST, WORLD-CLASS HIGHER EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS, I DO NOT.
>> DO WE KNOW HOW WELL COLLEGES ARE DOING THE JOB PLACEMENT RIGHT NOW?
IS IT A SORT OF GLARING PROBLEM?
IT'S A DEMOGRAPHIC PROBLEM RIGHT NOW, THERE ARE JUST FEWER YOUNG PEOPLE THAN THERE USED TO BE.
>> YEAH, I DON'T HAVE THE DATE ON THAT, BUT I WON'T STICK UP FOR ARTS EDUCATION, BECAUSE OFTENTIMES, IT IS NOT A REAL OBVIOUS PATH WHEN YOU ARE AN ENGLISH MAJOR THAT YOU'RE GOING TO THEN BECOME A WRITER OR WORK, YOU KNOW, IN ENGLISH LITERATURE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, BUT IT TEACHES THE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR A LOT OF DIFFERENT CAREERS, AND I THINK MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT KIND OF LIBERAL ARTS DEGREE YOU HAVE IS WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE WORKING TOWARD GETTING INTERNSHIPS AND WORK EXPERIENCE THAT THEN HELPS LIKE LAY DOWN A CAREER PATH FOR YOU.
>> SARAH, I WENT TO OHIO STATE, YOU WENT TO OHIO STATE.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT OHIO STATE'S MOTTO IS?
>> I KIND OF FORGET.
THERE IS THE ALMA MATER SONG .
[ INAUDIBLE ] >> I'M GOING TO DO THE LATIN FIRST.
ALADDIN TEACHERS, PLEASE FORGIVE ME.
[ INAUDIBLE ] OR EDUCATION FOR CITIZENSHIP.
SO, THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, LAURA.
SO, WHAT IS LATIN FOR EDUCATION TO GET A JOB?
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT WOULD BE.
SO, THAT'S WHAT MIKE DeWINE IS SAYING, THOUGH.
>> IT IS STRIKING THE RIGHT BALANCE, AND THE GOVERNOR WAS VERY STRONG IN SAYING HE LIKES SMART PEOPLE, BECAUSE SMART PEOPLE TEND TO ADAPT.
LET ME ALSO QUOTE, THERE IS A GUY NAMED BOB DYLAN THAT WROTE THAT TIMES ARE A CHANGING, AND I THINK THAT THAT APPLIES TO HIGHER ED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
WE HAVE GOT A DIFFERENT WORLD AHEAD OF US AND WE HAD 10 OR 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO.
>> I THINK TO THAT POINT, TERRY, WE ARE GOING TO NEED PEOPLE THAT CAN SYNC THROUGH COMPLEX PROBLEMS.
THERE IS A SLIPPERY SLOPE HERE, LIKE LAURA IS GETTING AT, OF COMPLETELY DEVALUING OR ALLOWING RESOURCES TOWARDS LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION.
AND YOU SEE EVEN GUYS LIKE THE FOUNDER OF [ INAUDIBLE ], A HUGE TECHNOLOGY COMPANY THAT IS TALKING ABOUT LAMENTING THE DECLINE OF THE U. S. BECAUSE A LACK OF AN UNDERSTANDING OF HISTORY.
THAT IS NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO HAPPEN JUST THROUGH KEEPING A FOCUS SOLELY ON WHAT IS THE A TO B JOB SITUATION, BUT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE CRITICAL THINKERS TO HELP US NAVIGATE THIS VERY COMPLICATED TERRAIN.
>> A PROPOSAL AS PART OF THE BUDGET AND THE HOUSE IS SET TO COME OUT WITH ITS VERSION OF THE BUDGET LIKELY ON TUESDAY, SO, WE WILL SEE IF THEY KEEP IT IN OR IF THEY TAKE IT OUT.
BUT MAYBE A PIECE OF LATIN IN THE BUDGET AS WELL.
AS STATE OFFICIALS DEBATE WHAT THEY CALL LIMITED TOLERANCE FOR EDUCATION, THEY SEEM POISED TO GET $600 MILLION TO THE BILLIONAIRE OWNER OF THE CLEVELAND BROWNS TO BUILD A DOME STADIUM.
THE BROWNS WANT TO BUILD A DOME OUTSIDE OF CLEVELAND, SOME IN THE LEGISLATURE PROPOSE THE STATE BORROWING THE MONEY, IT COULD END UP COSTING $1 BILLION WHEN YOU ADD IN THE INTEREST PAYMENTS.
GOVERNOR DeWINE WANTS TO TAX GAMBLING COMPANIES AND ESTABLISH A PERMANENT FUND TO HELP PAY FOR ANY PRO STADIUM IN OHIO.
TERRY CASEY, YOU SAID ON THIS SHOW, YOU DIDN'T THINK THE TAX THING WAS GOING TO WORK RID OF THE LOAN PROGRAM, WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT ON THAT?
>> I THINK IT IS IN THE DANGER ZONE, TOO, AND THE GOVERNOR ON WEDNESDAY WAS PRETTY CLEAR IN SAYING HOW DUMB HE THOUGHT IT WAS TO PUT $600 MILLION IN BONDS OUT THERE THAT WILL HAVE TO BE PAID FOR OUT OF A CHALLENGED GENERAL FUND, SO I THINK THIS ISSUE IS VERY TROUBLED, AND ALSO, I MIGHT SAY --ONE PERSON SAID TO ME, WE OUGHT TO PUT THE BROWNS ON PAY FOR PERFORMANCE.
BASED ON THE NUMBER OF WINS DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH MONEY THEY GET PAID AND BASED ON THIS PAST SEASON, THE BROWNS WOULD GET MUCH MONEY.
BUT $600 MILLION, THE GOVERNOR HAS DETAILED THAT IF CLEVELAND WANTS $600 MILLION, WHAT ABOUT CINCINNATI, WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER PROTEINS?
I THINK THIS THING IS VERY SHAKY.
AND THE GOVERNOR, I READ BETWEEN THE LINES, IS NOT HAPPY WITH THIS IDEA, AND HE WILL HAVE IT BE TOWED IF THEY PUT IT IN THE BUDGET.
ACCEPT MY QUESTION, WHAT HE VITO, WHEN YOU GO THAT FAR AGAINST THE LEGISLATURE, LAURA?
>> TO BE DETERMINED, I MEAN, WE ARE REALLY EARLY IN THIS BUDGET PROCESS.
THE HOUSE FINANCE COMMITTEE IS SCHEDULED NEXT WEEK TO ROLL OUT A SUBSTITUTE BILL, AND THAT IS JUST THE FIRST STAGE, IT STILL HAS TO GO THROUGH THE SENATE, THEN THE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE, THEN TO GOVERNOR DeWINE.
WE WILL SEE WHERE EVERYBODY IS A FEW MONTHS FROM NOW.
>> BUT THIS IS A LOT OF SUPPORT ON LEGISLATIVE LEADERS, FOR HELPING THE BROWNS SOMEHOW?
>> I MEAN, I THINK SO FAR, FOLKS HAVE VOICED THAT THEY WANT TO FIND SOME WAY TO SUPPORT THE BROWNS.
MANY ARE COOL ON THE IDEA, ESPECIALLY REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE, A VERY COOL ON THE TAX IDEA.
AND SOME OF THAT COMES FROM GOVERNOR DeWINE ISN'T THE BIGGEST PROPONENT OF SPORTS BETTING, AND HE WANTS TO SEE THOSE OUT-OF-STATE COMPANIES HAVE MORE STAKE IN THE GAME, AND I JUST DON'T THINK A LOT OF REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS SEE EYE TO EYE WITH HIM ON THAT.
>> SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BEHIND THIS, MORGAN?
IT SEEMS LIKE ANCIENT HISTORY NOW, BUT BECAUSE THE TAXPAYERS DID NOT HELP THEM BUILD A NEW STADIUM, MARK VOGEL MOVED THE TEAM TO BALTIMORE.
OUR LAWMAKERS AFRAID THE BROWNS ARE GOING TO DO THAT AGAIN?
I JUST DON'T SEE THAT HAPPENING AGAIN.
>> MAYBE THAT IS PART OF IT, MAYBE THE OWNERS OF THE BROWNS AND THEIR INFLUENCE OVER POLITICIANS COULD BE PART OF IT, I CAN'T EXACTLY SAY.
BUT DATA ON THIS IS CLEAR THAT THESE TYPES OF SUPPORTS FOR A PRO SPORTS TEAM DO NOTHING TO HELP THE ECONOMY AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENTS.
AND I AM HAPPY TO SEE SOME DEMOCRATS SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THIS.
>> AND UP IN CLEVELAND, BOTH THE COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENTS, THEIR ABILITY TO COME UP A $6 MILLION, THAT ALONE 60 OR $600 MILLION IS PRETTY SLIM TO NONE.
AND ALSO, IF YOU LISTENED CAREFULLY TO THE SENATE PRESIDENT YESTERDAY, HE MADE REAL CLEAR THAT IF THEY DID THIS, THERE NEEDS TO BE GUARANTEES THAT THE STATE WON'T GET STUCK.
SO, DEPENDENT UPON WHAT LANGUAGE IS IN THERE, HIGH IN THE SKY PROJECTIONS OF HIGH TICKET PRICES OR PARKING REVENUES COULD ALL FALL APART AND MIGHT NOT HAPPEN.
SO, I WOULD NOT BET ON THIS AS A SURE THING.
IN FACT, I THINK IT IS VERY SHAKY, >> VOTERS DON'T SUPPORT THIS, BUT IT IS NOT AN IDEA THAT DECIDES ELECTIONS, THIS IS JUST SORT OF NOISE?
>> WELL, I DON'T KNOW.
ESPECIALLY AT THE MORE LOCAL LEVEL, IF IT IS ON YOUR WATCH THAT THE BROWNS ARE LOST, I COULD SEE PEOPLE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THAT IN A CAMPAIGN, FOR SURE.
>> IT IS GOES TO A BALLOT, THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, WHICH WON THE SUPER BOWL, THE VOTERS REJECTED OVERWHELMINGLY GIVING THAT TEAM A NEW STADIUM, AND THEY JUST WON THE SUPER BOWL.
FAR MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THE BROWNS.
>> PARTICULARLY, OWNERS ARE BILLIONAIRES.
I MEAN, HE BOUGHT THE TEAM FOR $1 BILLION.
IT IS NOW WORTH FIVE OR $6 BILLION.
WITH THE STADIUM, IT WOULD BE WORTH EVEN MORE, AND THE TV CONTRACTS ARE OUTRAGEOUS, WHAT THEY ARE PAYING IN THE NFL.
AND ALSO, THIS IS A STADIUM WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE EIGHT HOME GAMES A YEAR, WHAT IS THE POINT?
>> [ INAUDIBLE ] >> SO, FOR THOSE OF US WITH GYM MEMBERSHIPS, DISAPPOINTING TURN IN U. S. CONGRESS THIS WEEK THAT SENATE REPUBLICANS ARE TRYING TO OVERTURN THE RULE THAT THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION RELEASED THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED YOU TO GET OUT OF YOUR GYM MEMBERSHIP JUST ONE CLICK ONLINE, SO HOPEFULLY THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT THROUGH.
X WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO THE OSU SCHOOL, I HAPPENED TO MEET THE DEAN WEDNESDAY AT THE GOVERNOR'S PROGRAM, TALKED TO HIM, AND I SAID I AM REALLY IMPRESSED, THERE ARE ONLY 34 OF THESE SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY AND YOURS IS RANKED FOURTH.
HE QUICKLY CORRECTED ME, THERE ARE NOW UP TO THIRD THINK ABOUT, THERE ARE MANY PARTS OF THE OHIO STATE EMPIRE THAT A THIRD BEST IN THE NATION, AND THEY ARE GETTING BETTER WITH ADDITIONAL MONEY THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THEM BY A FORMER CBS PRESIDENT.
>> NOT IN THE SHOW TODAY, BUT PRETTY INTERESTING TO WATCH BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE NEARLY UNANIMOUSLY VOTE TO REPEAL [ INAUDIBLE ] THAT CAME FROM HOSPITAL 6, SO WE WILL SEE WHERE IT GOES NEXT.
>> THOSE TWO OBSOLETE COAL PLANTS, ONE OF WHICH IS IN INDIANA.
>> EARLIER THIS MONTH, WE PUBLISHED AN INVESTIGATION INTO VICIOUS DOG ATTACKS, AND THE WEAKNESSES IN OHIO'S LOSS, AND IF YOU MISSED IT, IT IS STILL ONLINE AT DISPATCH.
COM/VICIOUS.
>> DEFINITELY, WE WILL PUT THAT ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AS WELL BE MY FINAL THOUGHT IS THESE TEAMS ARE INCREASING IN VALUE.
THE CELTICS LOST, IF SOMEBODY WANTS TO BUY THEM FOR $6 BILLION, THE CURRENT OWNERS PAID ABOUT 350,000 --$350 MILLION FOR THAT TEAM.
IT IS A 16 FOLD INCREASE IN VALUE.
HOW ABOUT WE PUT IN THE STATE LAW, WE GET 5% OF THE CAPITAL GAINS AND YOU SELL YOUR TEAM AFTER WE BUILD YOUR STADIUM, HOW ABOUT THAT?
ANYWAY, THAT IS COLUMBUS ON THE RECORD FOR THIS WEEK.
