One curious resident wrote in to learn more about a civil war camp.
They asked, where was Camp Thomas?
We asked local historian Doreen Uhas Sauer to tell the story.
Camp Thomas is best described as being on North High Street, where Arcadia Avenue comes into North High and there is a Tim Horton's donuts there.
And then it slowly climbs up the hill on Arcadia.
It was on ground that was rented by the federal government to be a Civil War Union training camp.
And it was part of the old North Columbus.
The Beer's family rented the land.
It may have stretched all the way up almost to the railroad tracks.
It's a little hard to tell.
At one point, it had a very famous commander, General Lew Wallace, who wrote the book Ben-Hur.
And it was actually a place where former prisoners of war in southern prison camps were brought back to sort of convince them they wanted to go back into battle.
They often did not want to go back into battle and they ran into the neighborhoods and escaped.
So we consider it the first draft dodgers in the university area.
