Michela DiTommaso is from Italy. She arrived in the United States in 1954 with her family in search of a better life. In the middle of the 20th century, immigrants were expected to assimilate to American culture. Assimilation meant she was expected to blend into American society and was cut off from her family members back in Italy. Today teaches English as a Second Language to new immigrants.
