Poet Dunya Mikhail reveals a poignant personal history through verse. Born in Iraq in 1965 and famous for her subversive used of symbolism in her poetry, she fled to America in the 1990s after discovering her name was on Saddam Hussein’s list of enemies. This Michigan resident, who is a recipient of the United Nations Human Rights Award for Freedom of Writing, describes the impact of poetry.
